Alabama “Feels Like Home” to Jeri
October 27, 2007
The Huntsville Times wrote up this article on Jeri’s visit to Alabama yesterday. She asked Republican women to support her husband:
Jeri Thompson, wife of Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson, showed Friday that she’s just one of the girls.
Alabama Republican women, that is.
Young daughter in arms, she danced to a live band at the Von Braun Center performing “Rocky Top.”
Although in Alabama, dancing to a Tennessee state song worked for Thompson, whose husband may give those in attendance at the Alabama Federation of Republican Women’s Convention hope that the GOP can win the White House in 2008.
Fred Thompson, 65, was born in Sheffield in Alabama’s northwest corner, and grew up just across the state line in Lawrenceburg, Tenn. He represented Tennessee in the U.S. Senate from 1994-2003.
“When we come here, it feels like home,” Jeri Thompson said.
Thompson met with Republican women to drum up support for her husband, who didn’t attend the convention.
She talked up his conservative positions on defense and family values as he campaigns for the party’s nomination.
“Those are the values he wants to spread all across America,” she said.
Jeri Thompson’s appearance in Huntsville came two days after Fred Thompson told a Florida crowd that the government should deny federal dollars to cities and states that don’t report their illegal immigrants.
The issue is important to conservatives who may influence voting in the primaries.
Jeri Thompson visited Orange Beach in July. She said she loves coming to Alabama because the state is “so supportive of our military.”
